BEGINNER GUIDE

Start with a repeatable ruck

Rucking is purposeful walking or hiking while carrying an external load. Your first session should feel easy enough to repeat, not like a test of your maximum capacity.

  1. Choose a flat or paved route with an easy bailout.
  2. Use a stable, comfortable load and count water and supplies in the total.
  3. Walk at a conversational effort for 20–30 minutes.
  4. Note effort, rubbing or hotspots, and how you feel the next day.
  5. Change one variable—load, distance, pace, or terrain—only after recovery is normal.

Stop signals

Stop for sharp or escalating pain, numbness, weakness, dizziness, confusion, chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, or signs of heat illness. If you have a medical condition, recent injury, balance problem, osteoporosis, or pregnancy/postpartum considerations, seek individualized professional guidance.
